Do you ever feel as if others around you believe in you more than you believe in yourself? Think about the last time someone believed in your abilities and ideas, when you yourself weren’t so sure they were enough. Self-belief is a funny thing… It seems we either have it, or we don’t. And when we don’t it can make achieving our goals seem almost impossible.
Did you notice that I said “seem almost impossible”? Not, it will make them impossible, or definitely impossible… only seem impossible. That’s because the path to believing in yourself and achieving your goals because you believe you can lies in your own perceptions, and in your own mind. You can do anything you put your mind to as long as you believe you can.
If you have trouble believing in yourself, here are a few ideas you can put to work for you to strengthen your own sense of self-belief.
1. Start believing in yourself by being grateful for what you already have.
When you lack self-belief, it’s easy to focus on areas of lack in your life. Take a moment or two to count your blessings and give thanks for what you already have. You’ll find yourself believing more and more that you are capable of achieving your goals when you can see what you’ve already accomplished.
2. Have a dream for yourself.
We all need dreams to keep ourselves moving forward. Whether your dream is a new job, a new house, or a new relationship doesn’t matter. All that matters is you have a dream.
When you have a dream for your future and you believe in it, then you are also believing in your ability to achieve that dream. Take these words by Eleanor Roosevelt to heart… “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
3. Set goals with the intention of achieving your dreams.
It’s one thing to have a dream, it’s another to do something about achieving that dream. So many people have wonderful dreams, but they never do anything about them because they’ve already convinced themselves they’ll never be able to achieve them. Don’t be one of those people!
When you set goals and take action on them, you are cultivating the belief in yourself that yes, you can achieve your dreams. If you take one action every day toward the fulfillment of a dream, then you can’t help but believe in yourself and your ability to be successful because you are making progress every day.
4. Develop confidence in your ability to get things done.
Having confidence in your abilities is one of the biggest parts of believing in yourself. If your self-confidence is a little low, you can give it a boost at the same time you are building up your sense of self-belief. Keep your to-do list achievable, and take baby steps when you have to. Every time you complete a task, cheer yourself on, and soon you will have an unwavering belief in your ability to accomplish everything you set out to do.
5. Keep yourself motivated.
There may be days when you don’t feel much like working toward your goals. Don’t let your lack of motivation undermine your growing sense of self-belief. When you are able to motivate yourself to work even when you don’t feel like it, you create momentum which in turn fuels your motivation to keep going even more. It’s a great cycle to get caught up in because every time you motivate yourself, you believe in yourself a little more too.
6. Take care of yourself.
When you lack belief in yourself, you also lack self-confidence, and self-worthiness. It’s very hard to treat yourself well when you don’t believe you deserve good things in life, and that’s exactly what happens when you don’t believe in yourself.
Learn to take care of yourself, and treat yourself with the respect and love you would give to other people you care about. Develop self-care rituals and pamper yourself as a reward for a job well done each day. If you need ideas on how to get started, you can find a few here.
7. Don’t give up on yourself when the going gets rough.
When things get tough, don’t stop believing in yourself. You’ve come this far, and you know you have it in you to make an awesome batch of lemonade out of whatever lemons life has handed you. Keep on believing in yourself and in your abilities to overcome whatever obstacles you meet.
If you need a little help shoring up your self-belief you can use affirmations. Write them down, repeat them to yourself during the course of a day, but above all use them to remind yourself that you can do this, you are confident, successful, and have the ability to do whatever you put your mind to.
Here are a few examples of affirmations you can use:
- I recognize my ability to accomplish any goal I choose to.
- I AM optimistic about my future because I know I can achieve any goal I set for myself.
- I AM able to do anything I believe I can do.
- I treat myself with the same love and kindness I show to others.
- I AM satisfied with the life I AM creating for myself.
- My belief in myself motivates me to get things done.
- I AM my own best cheerleader. I have faith in my abilities no matter what.
- I see, enjoy, and am grateful for the abundance that surrounds me.
- When I believe in myself, I attract others who believe in me too.
Developing your sense of self-belief is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. Using these tips to grow your belief in yourself will also help to increase your confidence and your self-esteem at the same time. You will know without a doubt that you can handle anything life throws your way because when you believe in yourself, good things happen.
